DRRC Contributes to the Leader Dogs For The Blind

The Detroit Regional Relocation Council hosted an event to benefit the Leader Dogs For the Blind of Rochester, Michigan.

Founded in 1939 by Lions Club members, Charles Nutting, Don Schuur and S.A. Dodge, Leader Dog has successfully matched and graduated over 13,000 person / dog teams since its inception. The dream of these men became vision and independence for thousands.

Radio 96.3 Co-Host and Leader Dog puppy raiser, Lisa Jesswein, kicked off the activities that included mingling with puppies, kennel tours and demonstrations of the training process. There was also a testimonial by Laurie Craig a local resident who talked about her Leader Dog, Kaitlin and the graduation process she went through to allow her dog to become her eyes to the world. Craig said she knew this was the right dog for her because her adopted son’s name is Kailin!

Thank you to all the generous donors!  With sponsorships and silent auction items from several of the DRRC members and Rochester businesses the donation to Leader Dogs was over $5,000.

Giving back to the community is a top priority of DRRC.

Our commitment to helping others began in 1994 when we started our annual holiday party for the children at the St. Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center.  Each year we host the event, where we paint sweatshirts, eat pizza and enjoy a magic show and watch as Santa gives the children gifts and stockings donated by our membership.  Click here to view photos of some of the cards we received from the children in the past!

In addition to our annual party, we also collect donations for a charity at each of our business and social functions.  DRRC members have supported the following nonprofits: Dress for Success DetroitThe Lions Club; Michael J. Fox Foundation For Parkinson’s Disease; The Kidney Foundation; The Michigan Humane Society – Detroit Shelter; Pontiac Rescue Mission; and the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation.

All member input is important.  We encourage charitable recommendations and welcome members to serve on the Charities Committee.
